The NCZC has limited space for short and long-term residencies. Students who live at the Center generally have outside work or school and are independent much of the time. Residency at the Center is not a full-time training program.
Ideally, residential practice allows students to more fully integrate the practice into their day to day lives. Living on site allows the student access to the zendo and the teacher and provides a supportive environment for concentrated effort and practice.
Residents are expected to participate in all of the activities of the Center unless they conflict with the students work or school schedule. In addition, residents contribute each week in caretaking and light work to maintain the Center.
Residents are trained in the various aspects of running the zendo, sesshin, and other events and eventually take on leadership positions at the Center. Residents are expected to be members in good standing and because residents are often the “public face” of the ZC, they are expected to practice upright conduct and follow the precepts.
Anyone interested in residency should first establish a regular Zen practice, preferably at the NCZC and begin to get to know the community. There is always a trial residency period to make sure it is a good fit for the community, the teacher, and the student. For costs and more information please email us.
Private Retreats
Over the years, many people have taken advantage of the NCZC’s beauty, quiet, and support for individual retreats. This may involve more time in nature, reading, and sitting individually or with the community. During individual retreats, guests are expected to cook for themselves. Because we are an rural retreat center, it is necessary for individuals to have their own transportation. For costs and more information, please email us.
